The remote eastern end of is where Stony Batter has become an interesting place to explore. The area got it's name from some unusual rock formations deposited as a result of volcanic activity more than 8 million years ago. During World War two the New Zealand army built three huge concrete gun emplacements and dug mole-like mazes of tunnels at the eastern end on the hill "Stony Batter". Open to the public they offer both an insight to the extent of defence preparations and wonderful views of the southern end of the Hauraki Gulf. You need a flashlight to view its very dark empty rooms and deep tunnels. From the public reserve there are magnificent views up the east coast of Auckland past Kawau Island and across to Great Barrier Island.
